About the ICTA BPO Program in Jaffna, Sri Lanka

The recently concluded IT-BPO program organized by the Information and Communication Technology Agency, Sri Lanka emerged as a great hit. As per the organizers, the event was a major success. The reports also suggest that the program created a huge interest amongst the students of the North Sri Lanka.

Titled the Information technology Business process Outsourcing (IT-BPO) program, this major event saw a good attendance of over 4000 students. All the 4000 students who were present at this 3-day career guidance event belong to grade 9, grade 10 and grade 11 and 12. Hence, it stood as a great platform for the students to know about the industry prospect, growth and requirements. Moreover, out of the total number of participants, it was found that the girls had slightly outnumbered their male counterparts.

The 3 day Information Technology Business process outsourcing event was organized at the Jaffna Vembady Girls’ High School. The main aim of this event was to focus on the IT BPO career management. Apart from the students, there were several dignitaries present at the 3 day program.

According to the organizers, there was a keen interest amongst all participants. It showed that IT-BPO as one career on par or superior than that of the professions like those of the engineers, accountants, doctors and others those who include an appealing proposition.

It is also said that this program seemed to have selected the ultimate group thereby pointing upon the O/L. The O/L group formed to be 60 percent of the whole lot of participants including the pre-final A/L undergraduates as well.

The career seminar held at the Jaffna Vembady Girls’ High School auditorium was seated parallel to that of the Jaffna Mini Infotei Exhibition welcoming people with great enthusiasm.

Students present at this career guidance program came from schools all over the district of Jaffna. Apart from these, students from the distant places and the neighboring districts like that of Mannar and Vavuniya were also amongst the participants. Though a majority of participants were undergraduates, yet they all had manifested a huge interest in learning about the Information Technology and Business process outsourcing industry and it’s potential.

An ICTA representative commented that most students were very quick to ask their queries. At the event, when the students were asked for some suggestions or answers, most of them where prompt with the answers and replies raising their hands for their turn.

The entire program included the attendance by the members in groups at 1 hour seminar. There were a total of 5- one hour seminars each of which were held in the all 3 days. This was followed by the visit to the career guidance cubicles where almost one and one career management counseling was offered by the counselors. The counselors responsible for conducting the event were authorized by the Education Ministry and also the Industry.

Counselors present at the seminar were well trained and comprised of a total of 13 belonging from the Northern Province Education Ministry department based in Jaffna, Sri Lanka like Mannar, Vavuniya, Thenmaraachchi, Kilinochchi, Mullaitivu and the other 11 from the Information technology industry in Jaffna, Sri Lanka.
